When you think of goalies these days most are butterfly style based and standup is right behind it. However what about those who are neither?
That is where this young goalie comes in. At 17 years old, Ryan Armstrong is making headlines for his style which is more reflex and reaction. Ryan has been playing goalie since he was eight years old and has struggled through out his career for the way he has played.
Having played back up goalie until last year, his greatness in the game has been over shadowed and unable to shine through. But like many young players, there are spots where he is growing still.
As for the postives, he is quick, responds well to pressure, able to recover fast and follows the puck well.
When it comes to areas he needs to become stronger in; five hole, poke check and stick side shots.
With the prospect series coming around the corner and with a chance to be a starting goalie more often then not, we could see this young man grow into a strong and soild goal tender.
Though with only having a year under his belt a starter, the real test for Ryan lays in the area if he could handle playing for a long stretch while keeping his game at the level he is known from.
For the coaches who want to take the risk and sign a non tradtional goalie, then Ryan maybe the goalie for them.
